Euphorbia is an extraordinary plant. I’m so excited about it.
It has many varieties and many are toxic to animals. One Mediterranean variety has a gummy white sap which has been used by fishermen in the central mediterranean basin for centuries to anaesthetise fish, making them much easier to catch. Fisherman’s Friend, you could call it.
Euphorbia was named by Karl Linnaeus after the physician to King Juba II of Mauretania – king of North Africa in Roman times – because this physician used the plant to cure his patient from a stomach or intestinal problem.
