This is one of the figures from an oil painting I’m working on. She’s definitely a woman and predominantly painted in crimson and magenta, but I hesitate to call her Lady in Red for obvious reasons. However I really like her already.
So it’s really quite strange learning ‘proper’ painting. I see what I’ve done and have no sense that it comes from my own hand. None at all. However, it does seem to me that I’m making progress in learning to paint like ‘everyone else’. This is a second draft. Once I’ve mastered these techniques, which may take a while because it’s very difficult, I will have earned the right to decide if I want to paint like that. Posted from the sitting room at Soho House, London (with a large cappuccino).
This is a detail of a nude torso portrait in oils, began last night at Atelier class. We have the model for three consecutive weeks, so it will change considerably over time. I’m posting it on rather a good day in which I received two interesting commissions for portraits.
This is a figure painting exercise in oils, of a female nude obviously. An impatient sketch. I photographed it and digitally altered the colour balance to give it a bit of heat. In principle this is similar to what the old painters used to do, centuries ago, when they washed glazes of red over a dried green ground. My favourite bits are the knees, the right hand, and the bench.
Another exercise in oil painting; a still life at the Atelier school last night after a long day at work. At a certain point, I get really tired, and just have enough energy to make what I’ve done, not quite accurate as it is, look pretty. I couldn’t find the right colours- egg-yolk yellow for the vase etc – but I did get the right soft feeling to it all.
