She’s in Make-Up

This is about the representation of women – in the glamour, beauty, film and fashion industries. On a film set, someone might ask ‘have you seen so-and-so? and the reply might be, ‘she’s in make-up’, EG having hair and face done in the make-up department.

It’s a self portrait about how desperate a person might feel inside – sitting in the make-up truck on a shoot, with a team of brilliant people working around their face to produce a polished exterior. It’s ‘emotion recollected in tranquility’ as I haven’t sat in such a place for many years. I took this polaroid last year, scanned it and painted over with computer software.

The passing of time is a mystery, and a perplexing thing. I did this computer painting in late December 2010, and just found it in my files. The face looks like I feel about those 15 months, vanished and gone.

This is my first rough sketch of Bump the cat (see below) and my favourite of all. Sometimes it’s better not to complete a picture.

Click on the painting if you want to see it in larger size.

I like painting with digital tools much more than using paints. You can’t beat the translucence, the way the light shines through the colours on the screen.
