Ink + Wax

It’s the beginning of a long bank holiday weekend and that’s cause of jubilation! Straight to my painting room and into some old painty clothes and this is what I came up with just now. Wax and ink (beautiful inks from the V&A Museum shop) make a magical combination, and something closer to the look of what an iPhone can do.

Back to the iPhone

I’ve been sick. iPhone painting is perfect when propped on cushions in bed. No paint, no mess, very speedy. Here is a quick sketch done on the Brushes app of a man in a sort of ‘funnel neck’ jacket.

Zoom In – Park Shadows

Zooming in to a close-up of a corner of a picture, just like zooming in to a close-up of someone’s face, produces surprisingly powerful results. In this case, when you zoom in you see the light hearted  details in a sombre picture (posted below).

Weather Forecast – London

This is to give a little idea, to those who may be basking in southern climes, of what the weather is like in London this August. Now we know why the British are famous for a stoic ‘stiff upper lip’. It’s a detail of a picture I’m doing in oils. I’m experimenting with pigments- the yellow is made with the stamens from a bunch of lilies.

Bow Tie

Here’s my second ever hand-made Monoprint, which I drew in less than two minutes on my training afternoon last week, and which I really quite like. After spreading the ink over the plate with a brush, I rolled it under the heavy press onto some lovely thick paper which had been soaked in water.

When you work fast, there’s a satisfying immediacy and you don’t even have to consider trying for perfection.

Big day for me. I took a day out to do a training day in print making – specifically Monoprints, which are prints in editions of one.

I like the process where you cover the plate with damp Somerset paper, put a thick blanket over the top, and turn the handle for the press (no need to go to the gym after doing several of these). This is the first one I did, rolling the inks onto the plate then using a dry brush and a cloth to scrape the ink away in places. I think I’m going to like making prints.

N.B. I took the photo of this print with my phone. The paper looks blue, but it’s really white. Just shows you how distorted the colours of a photo can get.
