Returning to my college in Cambridge for the first time since I left (a long time ago) I coloured over an older sketch on my iPhone on the train journey.
The opening of the Literary Archives at Newnham College was inspiring: speeches by alumni Claire Tomalin, Sarah Dunant, and Nicola Beaumont – and a peek at manuscripts by many great writers of all kinds amongst the alumni.
There was also George ‘Dadie’ Ryland’s table (as an old man he vaguely supervised me for my dissertation – I sought him out because he initiated my father into the exquisite tradition of speaking Shakespeare on stage, and he was a great friend of my godmother, Dame Peggy Aschcroft.)
I drew pictures across my finals papers (which seems significant now that I’ve got this blog) spent most of my last year in London and could not wait to get out of there, but now I am proud to have been an undergraduate at this very great place.
