Nude in Oils

Posted in Painting Diary on November 13, 2010 by Jenny

This is the first time I’ve used oil paints at the Life Drawing Club. The same model posed for us for three consecutive Saturday mornings, and it’s the longest I’ve spent on a painting so far.

Her pose kept changing a little (that’s my excuse anyway). I kept smushing the oils around the canvas board, but it never came out quite right.

The nude body is such a mainstay of our painting tradition: it’s incredible to think that some cultures do not countenance nudes being seen in art galleries or any other public place. In those circumstances, this little picture could become an explosive political and religious statement.

Flower of Condolence

Posted in Painting Diary on November 8, 2010 by Jenny

Why is it that we give flowers when people are suffering or grieving? There is nothing more full of grace I think, on this earth, and a flower can lift sorrowful spirits so tactfully.

This small digital iPhone flower is an offering of condolence for some people I know, at a very difficult time.
